Propolis is solvent-extracted from raw propolis (bee glue) or raw beeswax to provide a dry propolis powder which is soluble in organic solvents or water depending on the solvent used. Thus a dry propolis powder soluble in organic solvents can be obtained by shaking raw propolis or beeswax with an organic solvent which is then removed by evaporation or freeze drying. To obtain a dry water-soluble propolis powder the extraction solvent is an aqueous solvent containing 10 to 25 percent by weight of an organic solvent. Typical organic solvents include ethanol, C3-C4 alcohols, benzyl alcohol, ether, dimethyl sulphoxide, acetone, glycols and acetic acid. The propolis is stated to have cosmetic and therapeutic uses.
