Aq. solns. of propolis (bee glue) are prepd. by dissolving the propolis in water contg. a metal salt of a polyacid, and filtering to remove impurities. Typical salts are the alkali metal salts of carbonic, phthalic, boric, phosphoric and citric acids. In an example 300 g propolis was mixed with 100 g sodium citrate and added slowly to 10 l. boiling water. The soln. was filtered and contained 1.4% w/v of propolis. The solns. have therapeutic use, when applied by injection or directly onto mucous membranes. More conc. solns. without irritant properties, may be prepd.
