26,557. Honey, A. A. Dec. 2. Electric Locomotives and motor vehicles.- Relates to electromagnetic traction-increasing devices applicable to electric locomotives, cars, or other vehicles provided with metal wheels running o n rails. A soft-iron core 8 surrounded with a coil 9 of copper wire is freely mounted on the axle 4 close to a driving-wheel 6 and carries, at its free end, a small wheel 10 normally held clear of the rail by a spring 11. When a current is passed through the coil 9, the core becomes a magnet having the wheels 6, 10 as poles, and the wheel 10 is attracted to the rail which forms the keeper of the magnet. The attraction thus produced between the wheel 6 and the rail increases the tractive power of the locomotive or other vehicle. The core 8 and wheel 10 may be applied to any or all of the driving-wheels, and may precede or follow them, and the wheels 10 carried by cores mounted on the same axle may be independent, or mounted on a non-magnetic shaft carried by the cores. The spring 11 may be replaced by, or used in connection with, an elbowlever 12 provided with, or connected to, an operating-handle, or a cylinder having a piston connected to the core and actuated by compressed air may replace the spring.
