Electric railways and tramways.-To increase the grip of the wheels on the rails, coils 4, 5 are mounted on sleeves loose on the axles, and are connected by a bar of magnetic material 3 being wound so that the wheels 2 form the poles of two horse-shoe magnets. Current may be supplied from a battery 8, trolley wire, &c. through the coils in series.
