542,244. Making containers of flimsy material BEE BEE BISCUITS, Ltd., and BUXBAUM, E. K. June 24, 1940, No. 10814. [Classes 18 and 94 (ii)] Open containers are made from flimsy material such as thin sheets of cellulose derivatives, waxed paper, metal foil, tissue paper &c. by mechanically folding the sheet about the base and sides of a forming block, causing the folds to adhere at least to each other and stripping the formed container from the block by pressure applied to the inner surface. The sheet A, Fig. 3, is positioned on a plate 2 beneath a block 5, its sides turned up by hinged plates 4, the block moved through a die 1 to turn the remaining sides up and the folds thus formed laid against the sides by folders 9, 10, one of which may have an electric heating element at 13 if an adhesive requiring heat is used. The container is stripped from the block 5 by a frame 15, Fig. 7, carried on rods 18 which pass through the block and are actuated by a lever 19, return movement being effected by springs 16. Means for dispensing adhesive may be associated with a part of the table bounding the die aperture. The sides of the container may be held against the forming block by suction applied through holes in the sides of the block. A modification is described in which sheet material, e.g. thin cellulose acetate, is fed from a roll 70, Fig. 12, between rubber or covered friction rolls 72, and is cut by a blade 81 actuated by a cam 83. The web is positively positioned by two suction heads 93, these being connected to a suction main 100 and moving with the web, the required motion being derived from a cam 84 through roller 113, rod 111, lever 109 and rods 105. Curved guard rods 101 prevent lateral sagging and leaf springs bear on the web and prevent it from being lifted by the cutter. Specification 542,148 is referred to.
