The invention relates to a method for the preparation of metal or metal oxide catalysts that are supported on porous materials. The inventive method is characterised in that it comprises the following steps consisting in: impregnating activated carbon with a catalytically-active phase or with precursors of the catalytically-active phase, such as to obtain impregnated activated carbon; shaping a paste by mixing a mixture of powder from the support and from the impregnated activated carbon, or powder from the precursors of the support and the impregnated activated carbon, in an aqueous medium such as to form massive cylinders, smooth or ribbed pipe-type hollow cylinders which may be straight, curved, regularly shaped or irregularly shaped, plates, extruded forms, honeycomb structures or spheres; and subjecting the product thus obtained to a heat treatment in order to eliminate the activated carbon by means of combustion and, in this way, to deposit the catalytically-active phases on the support. The invention also relates to the use of catalysts thus prepared in heterogeneous catalysis.
