The invention relates to a foil (2) for producing a metal honey-comb structure (1), especially a catalyst support, wherein the foil (2) has an average surface roughness (Ra) of more than 0.3 &mgr;m (micrometer) on both its surfaces in at least one direction of measurement. Preferably, the foil (2) is a rolled foil and has an average surface roughness (Ra) of more than 0.3 &mgr;m, preferably more than 0.5 &mgr;m, especially preferred approximately 0.6 &mgr;m, in the rolling direction (L) and/or in the transverse direction (Q) to the rolling direction. The foil (2) can have an oxide coating (3) with a thickness (D) between 60 and 80 nm (nanometer), preferably between 70 and 75 nm, on both of its surfaces. Despite the roughness, an even thickness (D) of the oxide coating (3) with a tolerance of less than 10%, preferably less than 5%, is advantageous on both surfaces. The foil allows the production of durable honey-comb structures, especially for the exhaust gas systems of internal combustion engines, which require an exactly defined distribution and quality of compounds in the interior of the honey-comb structure.
