To screen for a plant growth regulator derived from microorganisms, the present invention provides a plant growth regulator comprising an aqueous solution of anisic acid or an analog thereof. The concentration of the anisic acid or the analog thereof in the plant growth regulator is 15 µg/L to 1500 µg/L. In the present invention, the effects of the anisic acid and the analog thereof on plant growth and development are investigated by means of seed germination experiments, pot experiments, and field experiments; it is found that the anisic acid and the analog thereof can promote seed germination of rice, corn and soybean, increase tillering and yield of rice, and promote seedling growth of cucumber, tomato, Chinese cabbage, spinach and lettuce; and the anisic acid and the analog thereof can serve as a high-efficiency, low-toxicity, and low-cost novel plant growth regulator, which has significant development value and application prospects in agricultural production.
