Further provided herein are methods for engineering the progeny of parent plants to have increased growth under control and stress conditions, by treating the parent plants with compositions comprising itaconate, selecting for parent plants that have increased growth under control and stress conditions, and then generating progeny from these itaconate resistant parent plants.
