In some embodiments, an effective amount of necromass from a filamentous fungus, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), or a commercial fungal host is applied to soil, a crop plant, or a sugarcane sett. After incubation or growth, stable organic carbon and/or nitrogen availability in soil is increased relative to an untreated reference. In further embodiments, application of the necromass reduces runoff after watering or rainfall, increases root dry weight of a crop plant, and/or promotes establishment and early growth of sugarcane. The necromass may be formulated in suspensions, powders, dusts, pellets, or granules and may be used with an agriculturally acceptable carrier. The disclosure also provides bioorganic soil conditioner compositions comprising such necromass, as well as fungicide-treated sugarcane methods and compositions in which beneficial effects are attributable primarily to necromass.
