Raw clay was the primary construction material in buildings of traditional architecture in Cyprus. It is found in most traditional houses, in urban and semi-mountainous settlements. Common reinforcement methods include the addition of various additives such as straw or ash, to produce adobe, a material used in load bearing walls. Its rheological characteristics, ease of use and its reduced environmental impact (a fully recyclable material) make it, among other things, a material capable of being a source of inspiration and a field of research for new construction tools, such as 3D printing technology. Thus, the work attempts at an early stage to identify the possibilities and limitations of clay-based materials to be applied in robotic 3D printing by changing the parameters of the process and directly observing the impact on physically printed samples. For experimental prints, a robotic arm with an additional extruder is used for better control of the material flow velocity. The results provide us with useful information regarding the behavior of the material in printed form and its suitability as a widely used material in 3D printing.
