The construction sector must reduce its emissions, and building with raw earth (e.g. rammed earth) offers a sustainable alternative. However, the lack of standards and scientific knowledge still hinders its widespread adoption. This is a critical situation, especially when the buildings concerned are located in high-seismicity zones, thereby elevating the potential for catastrophic damage. This paper presents a preliminary experimental study on unreinforced and reinforced rammed earth walls using reinforcement systems suitable for new construction, including horizontal grids, coconut mats, wooden frames, and bamboo. The experimental campaign investigates both in-plane behaviour through shear tests and out-of-plane behaviour through bending tests. These combined tests are essential, as they aim to significantly advance current knowledge concerning the seismic resilience of rammed earth structures. The scope of this study is limited to two critical aspects of structural behaviour: the analysis of crack patterns and the evaluation of the maximum stresses reached.
