Disclosed is a process for clarifying cell homogenates which allows the production of a cleared homogenate that is sufficiently clear to be filtrated through a sterile filter. The process of the invention is useful for the large scale production of proteins or protein complexes, preferably of therapeutic proteins or protein complexes, where sterile filtration of the cleared homogenate is required.
