Evaluation of inulin content in selected plant species for functional applications

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInulin is a plant-derived fructan polysaccharide widely recognised for its prebiotic properties and beneficial effects on metabolic health. This study evaluated the inulin content of selected plant species to identify promising natural sources for functional food and pharmaceutical applications. Inulin was extracted using aqueous extraction and quantified by spectrophotometric analysis. Significant variability in inulin accumulation was observed among species. The highest content was detected in Arctium lappa roots (5008 ± 455 mg/100 g fresh weight), followed by Cichorium intybus roots (1943 ± 176 mg/100 g) and Helianthus tuberosus tubers (1374 ± 220 mg/100 g). Moderate levels were found in Althaea officinalis roots (378 ± 44 mg/100 g) and Cynara scolymus leaves (318 ± 9 mg/100 g), whereas minimal or undetectable amounts were observed in Allium species, Rumex confertus, and Hypericum perforatum.
