An electronic device acquires a video file to be played back and a subtitle file to be displayed, then decodes the video file to obtain a video frame, and decodes the subtitle file to obtain a subtitle frame; afterwards, the electronic device can extract subtitle color gamut information, subtitle position information, and the like from the subtitle frame; on the basis of the subtitle position information, extracts color gamut information at the subtitle display position of a subtitle in a corresponding video frame; on the basis of the subtitle color gamut information and the color gamut information at the subtitle display position of the subtitle in the corresponding video frame, calculates subtitle distinguishability; further, on the basis of the subtitle distinguishability, calculates the color value and transparency of a mask corresponding to the subtitle to generate a subtitle frame carrying a mask; then, synthesizes the video frame and the subtitle frame carrying the mask, and renders and displays same in a video playback window. As such, subtitle recognizability can be improved without changing the color of a subtitle, while certain visibility of video content is ensured, and user experience is improved.
