The compositions can include one or more natural oils or extracts comprising a therapeutically active compound to protect the cell or tissue of the animal from the microbial pathogen by direct inactivation of the microbial pathogen or by blocking the microbial pathogen entrance to the animal cell or tissue. Oil macerates that include a therapeutically active compound extracted from plants are also described.
