Matthias F Melzig, Professor for Pharmaceutical Biology of the Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany, studied pharmacy and experimental pharmacology / toxicology at the University Greifswald (doctorate in 1984, habilitation in 1989). After many prestigious positions in academia, he was appointed Professor in Pharmaceutical Biology at the Freie Universitaet Berlin in 2002 and served there as executive Director of the Institute of Pharmacy and most recently as Dean of the Faculty Biology-Chemistry-Pharmacy. He received many honorable tasks, such as Dr h.c. at the Medical University Warsaw and guest professorship at the Shaanxi University of Technology, Hanzhong City, China.
Matthias Melzig’s research focuses on natural product analytics, phytomedicine, and natural product pharmacological characterization (~300 publications, 300 oral presentations and posters). We highly appreciate his continuous dedication to natural product research and his strong commitment to the GA.
José Luis Ríos-Cañavate: As longstanding Professor of Pharmacology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Valencia (-2022), he participated in more than 50 research projects, many of them as a responsible investigator and others as a collaborator with important European professors. His research focuses on antimicrobials and anti-inflammatories properties of natural origin from which he isolated and studied different kinds of phytochemicals, such as alkaloids, phenolics, triterpenes, and saponins. For 47 years, José Luis Ríos-Cañavate has published more than 200 scientific articles in peer reviewed journals of the highest level in the field of pharmacognosy and pharmacology of natural products, as well as 70 books or chapters.
He served as editor of different journals, such as of Planta Medica and Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. He is member of 10 scientific societies and participated in the evaluation of more than 500 scientific articles from 30 different journals, as well as he evaluated research projects from 15 different countries. We appreciate his service as outstanding Planta Medica editor as well as esteemed natural product scholar and teacher.
