An aqueous suspension or colloid composition comprising dimethyl glutarate, at least one dialkyl ester which is not a sugar ester or dimethyl glutarate, at least one glycoside surfactant, at least one essential oil, and at least one sugar ester derived from esterification of a sugar and a fatty acid, where the composition achieves a mean reduction of >5^log10 viable bacteria within one minute, use of the composition to protecting a surface, and a method of transporting or storing a food item, or solvating a substance, comprising contacting the substance with the composition, are also included. The sugar ester is preferably a sucrose, fructose, lactose or glucose ester, preferably sucrose distearate. The dialkyl ester is preferably a succinate, carbonate, glutarate or adipate, preferably dimethyl succinate. The glycoside may be capryl glucoside, lauryl glucoside or coco glucoside. The composition may include a film forming agent and may be an o/w emulsion. The composition may act as a disinfectant or antibacterial. [No figure]
