The Deputy Executive Director of the International Olive Council (IOC), Abderraouf Laajimi, participated in the second Al-Jouf International Agricultural Forum, organised by the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture in collaboration with the Emirate of the Al-Jouf region and its secretariat.
This forum, held on 27 and 28 November 2024 at the Al-Jouf Centre in Sakaka, aimed to promote innovation and sustainable development in the agricultural sector through innovative products, services, and solutions, including advanced irrigation and harvesting technologies and water optimisation strategies.
On this occasion, Mr Laajimi delivered a lecture titled “The Global Olive Sector: Exploring Market Trends and Promoting Sustainable Innovation” during the session on “Market Trends and Technological Innovations for Sustainable Growth.” In his presentation, he highlighted the IOC as an international organisation dedicated to the global development of the olive sector.
The high-ranking IOC official addressed key challenges facing the sector, such as globalisation and climate change; global market trends, including production, consumption, imports, and exports; opportunities and development levers; the role of olive cultivation as an alternative strategy for climate change adaptation due to its contribution to carbon sequestration; the importance of standardisation and quality improvement; and the health benefits of olive oil.
He also emphasised the strategic importance of sustainability in agriculture, particularly in regions with limited natural resources, and showcased the IOC’s experience and initiatives in olive cultivation. These include its role in promoting sustainable technologies, training, and international collaboration.
The Al-Jouf International Agricultural Forum provided a unique platform for exchanging ideas, strengthening partnerships, and exploring new approaches to address challenges in the agricultural sector, with a focus on environmentally responsible and sustainable practices.
The IOC’s participation in this forum reflects its ongoing commitment to sustainable development, innovation, and international cooperation in the olive sector.
Saudi Arabia, a member of the IOC since 2019, plays an increasingly significant role in the global olive sector. With a national strategy focused on economic diversification and sustainable development, the country is investing in the expansion of its olive cultivation by promoting modern and environmentally friendly agricultural practices. Its active participation in IOC initiatives strengthens international cooperation in the sector and contributes to the promotion of harmonised standards and fair trade in the global market.
