Hive inspection is a tedious task but it must be regularly performed by apiarist and beekeeper to check the condition of hives at any time of the year. Parameters like worker bee numbers (female bees) and the male bees (drones), honey reserve, the weight of hive, are all indications that an apiarist or beekeeper based on experience need to know to take a course of action to improve a hive performance. Swarming is a natural phenomenon that occurs in honey bee colonies as a means of reproduction. But it is undesirable for honey beekeepers as it weakens honey production and hives. Traditionally, apiarist or beekeeper opens a hive and looks for queen cells and then removes them if they can be found. Swarms can be averted at the inset by the apiarist by closing the hive and finding swarming queens. This can happen at any time of the day in certain seasons. And in any case it is a problem for beekeeper. In this invention a method is describes to detect the swarming in real time by an algorithm based on sensory data and to inform apiarist or beekeeper as the swarm happens or in advance by risk assessment from sensory data. In this invention the condition of hive is monitored by installing in every hive of a beekeeping site, a low cost microcontroller with sensors like load cells, audio, temperature and humidity. This system can be used to monitor and assess all hives in an apiary for disease classification like varroa mite infestation and swarming.
