This year marks the 30th anniversary of the publication of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid
The International Olive Council (IOC) proudly celebrates World Olive Day, officially recognised by UNESCO in 2019 to spotlight the cultural, environmental, and economic significance of the olive tree. This year’s celebration is particularly special as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid, emphasising the vital role of olive products in promoting health, sustainability, and cultural heritage.
In honour of this occasion, the IOC, in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM), hosted a remarkable event on 21 November featuring experts from public health, nutrition, and agriculture. These distinguished speakers explored the enduring value of the Mediterranean Diet in tackling pressing global challenges, including climate change, sustainability, and public health.
Key speakers, including Antonia Trichopoulou, Miguel Ángel Martínez-González, Frank Hu, Walter Willett, and Greg Drescher, highlighted the extensive evidence supporting the Mediterranean Diet’s health benefits. They emphasised the olive tree’s central role in this diet, its pivotal contribution to sustainable food systems, and its remarkable importance in preserving cultural traditions. The discussions underscored the Mediterranean Diet’s unique position as a global model for healthy and environmentally conscious living.
The IOC extends its gratitude to all contributors for making the event a resounding success. For further details, including the official press release, photographs, and additional highlights, please visit our website.
